One of the biggest excuses I hear when it comes to nutrition is this:
“I was busy.”
“I was traveling.”
“I had no options.”
I get it.
Life gets chaotic. Schedules get packed. You are not always home with a perfectly prepped meal waiting for you.
But here is the truth.
Eating well on the go is not about perfection.
It is about preparation.
I recently came across a list of simple strategies for staying on track when life gets busy, and it reinforced something I have been telling my clients for years.
If you plan even a little, everything gets easier.
If you do not plan at all, everything gets harder.
Let’s break this down in a way that actually works.
Start Before You Leave the House
One of the simplest strategies is also the most overlooked.
Eat before you go.
If you are heading out for several hours, do not leave the house already behind. Have a solid meal with protein, carbs, and fats so you are not playing catch up later.
Because once you are starving, your decision making goes downhill fast.
Bring Food With You
This is where most people fall short.
You do not need to pack a full cooler, but having something with you changes everything.
Think simple:
- Fruit
- Nuts
- Protein bars
- Greek yogurt
- Jerky
- Hard boiled eggs
The goal is not perfection. The goal is having something better than nothing.
Because “nothing” usually turns into gas station snacks and regret.
Better Beats Perfect
This might be the most important point.
If your only option is a gas station or airport, you are not doomed.
You just need to make a better choice.
Grab:
- Fruit instead of candy
- Greek yogurt instead of pastries
- Nuts instead of chips
Is it perfect? No.
Is it better? Yes.
That is how progress is made.
Build a Simple Meal Anywhere
Even in less than ideal situations, you can piece together a decent meal.
Think in simple terms:
- 1 to 2 protein sources
- 1 to 2 carbs
- Some fats
- Add veggies when you can
You do not need a perfect plate. You just need a balanced one.
You Do Not Need to Be Perfect
This is where people get stuck.
They think if they cannot do it perfectly, it is not worth doing at all.
That mindset is what actually derails progress.
You are not always going to have great options.
Sometimes you just make the best choice available and move on.
And that is enough.
Have a Simple Standard
When life gets busy, fall back on the basics:
- Eat slowly
- Stop when you are satisfied
- Do not let one off meal turn into a bad day
Even when things are not ideal, these habits keep you grounded.
At the end of the day, this is not about being perfect on the road, at the airport, or during a busy workday.
It is about being prepared enough that you do not completely fall off.
Because the people who make progress are not the ones who have perfect conditions.
They are the ones who stay consistent when conditions are not perfect.
